Last Saturday night had the fashion community in Minneapolis attending the first ever MN Fashion Awards show and Rumble on the Runway, a competition in which teams showcase runway segments to a panel of local industry experts for judging. Created and produced by Dan Vargas, who also spearheads the New Year's Eve Crystal Ball party at International Market Square, the event was wonderfully extravagant and welcomed nearly a full house in The Depot to celebrate Minneapolis fashion with stage hosts Carly Aplin from the CW Twin Cities and former The Voice contestant Tim Mahoney.
The Minneapolis fashion community has always been loved for rattling the status quo, supporting local designers with shows such as the long-running Envision and the newly-formed Cult Collective's productions, among others. To properly celebrate a bona fide community like this requires not only seamless, high-end production with the prestige it deserves (which Vargas so amply provides), but also an awareness of the subject community. A celebration of local fashion doesn't mean runway segments that didn't come from the talented nominees and winners, but from local boutiques. In fact, the nominees and winners got little more than a listing of their names on the big screen before each category award was quickly handed out. Both the concept and production of the MN Fashion Awards and Rumble on the Runway was spirited, exciting and will certainly make for a bright event next year after a few tweaks. The most important thing was the local fashion industry coming together and celebrating during what was an overall entertaining night! And for that Vargas deserves a round of applause.
